I am very tempted to try that for my netbook.

I was distinctly unimpressed by it really. No artwork, nothing special. Its just a live CD with apt-get install lxde

No GDM, so usplash. Generally very early alpha.

I guess after about 10,000 downloads, Canonical will pursue the fact that they're using Ubuntu in their name... illegally.

I think it might be O.K.

Doubt it. Lubuntu will have to be incredibly good to get past the legal dept. and into a derivative position. Besides that, isn't Lubuntu trying to displace another Ubuntu derivative?

Umm... not sure.

That picture doesn't mean anything. It's not valid proof. Until I hear it from the horses mouth, that's all fallacy.

Lubuntu is an official Canonical spin-off that uses the X11 Environment Window as its desktop manager. It has Mark Shuttleworth's blessings.

alpha is for internal testing.
beta is for external testing.

perhaps they want to test their install scripts and general performance on a variety of super low-end systems, without having to purchase a bunch of low end systems? sure, it should work in theory....

though i will say it is a bit bizarre if, as you say, they dont have a display manager (gdm, slim, etc) set up and running at this point...

Looks like they may be going for their own (http://blog.lxde.org/?p=531) DM. Cool! :)

They want to package LXDE's new desktop manager, LXDM, in time for the Karmic Koala debut. A lot of work to be done in a month.

LXDM seems like such a waste of development time. Their main reason for not basing it on something like XDM is because "it's ugly". What pains me is how they could save SO MUCH TIME NOT REINVENTING THE WHEEL and just use the already fine working backend, and then just refine the front, displaying end.

Nothing wrong with GDM. One has to install a lot of GNOME programs just to get a complete desktop. That means bloat but still less than under GNOME or KDE.

XDM is basically minified GDM. XDM is light, compatible with many Gnome... things and it would be better to branch off of an existing technology than to reinvent something that has been reinvented many times before.

LXDE had its own manager called Slim. Didn't work under PCLOS. Time will tell if they get their new DM working for the OS.
