After the flags thread, let's have an anthem thread :)
So post away the best sounding national anthems.
Personally I think that the national anthem of Hungary is great

I also like this recording of my country's anthem [YOUTUBE] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FP3zAdLkVrQ)

my country, england, doesn't have a national anthem, but we use a few different poems set to music, hymns etc.

check out this one for england, 'i vow to thee' (it's so obviously sung by a welsh choir, not english, slight error by the video maker lol)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMP9GQapuOc

i like this one the best, i think it's the most used anthem for england. it's about how jesus came to england, and once again sometime there will be heaven on earth, in england.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKaJ4b0XYmI

i like the Liechtenstein one :P they played england once in football so the same anthem was played twice lol (Liechtenstein's anthem is the same as the british anthem)

I sort have always liked the Canadian national anthem, and yeh admittedly my native anthem "star spangled banner"
Despite the nation that created it is falling apart.
Sucks to be an American anymore, much less anything

I like it too and although Scots - its not our national anthem, the most likely candidate is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scots_Wha_Hae

In fact, it really only became popular because the Scottish rugby team used it in 1990 when they won the triple crown and it seems to have stuck.

I think "Flower of Scotland" is possibly one of the worst, with "God Save The Queen" needing renamed to "God save us from listening to this dirge"

You need something nice, upbeat, and wonderful, and that needs to be the original version.

Check out the Italian one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS8KdQi1GRk)

Though I think that since the Germans removed the lines "deutscheland uber alles" from theirs, it's one of the best.

Though for true upbeat and happiness, check out some Southern American anthems, such as Brazil's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soU1h6n__vQ).

Also: Argentina (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjWOxr3-M4c&feature=related)

really, I'd prefer if the Scottish one was changed. And if it were to change, there is only one track that EVERY scottish person could TRULY agree upon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEGFIbHJSHs&feature=related).

(apart from Peter Griffin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJDQKpTq7kM) but Family guy tells us he's half-Irish, so not Scottish anyway ;))

i think you are, we don't have one. God Save the Queen is the british anthem - the combined countries of england, scotland wales, northern ireland.

the country, England hasn't got one, we use a few different (stand-in) athems - Jerusalem, i Vow to Thee, God Save the Queen, Land of Hope and Glory etc.

Wow! I have to admit I never listened to so many National Anthems before but after listening to all of them I have a three way tie for my favorite National Anthem (listed in no certain order/with Flags:P):

1. Morocco (Instrumental): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADgOuF046vI

Lyrics:

Fountain of Freedom
Source of Light
Where sovereignty and safety meet,
Safety and sovereignty
May you ever combine!
You have lived among nations
With title sublime,
Filling each heart,
Sung by each tongue,
Your champion has risen
And answered your call.
For your soul and your body,
The victory they have conquered.
In my mouth
And in my blood
Your breezes have stirred
Both light and fire.
Up! my brethren,
Strive for the highest.
We call to the world
That we are here ready.
We salute as our emblem
God, Homeland, and King.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hymne_Ch%C3%A9rifien

Lyrics:

כֹּל עוֹד בַּלֵּבָב פְּנִימָה
נֶפֶשׁ יְהוּדִי הוֹמִיָּה,
וּלְפַאֲתֵי מִזְרָח, קָדִימָה,
עַיִן לְצִיּוֹן צוֹפִיָּה;

As long as in the heart, within,
A Jewish soul still yearns,
And onward, towards the ends of the east
An eye still gazes toward Zion;

Our hope is not yet lost,
The hope of two thousand years,
To be a free people in our land,
The land of Zion and Jerusalem.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatikvah

君が代は

There is no national anthem in any of the constituent parts of the UK by royal warrant, they're all by convention and by tradition.

England isn't a nation, therefore it cannot have a national anthem.
England is merely part of a nation and that nation's anthem is God Save The Queen, a song which I find completely objectionable, here's why:

6. Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring
May he sedition hush
And like a torrent rush
Rebellious Scots to crush
God save the King

It's the same reason I can't stand Flower of Scotland.
National anthems should be about positive things, not violence.

It's one of the great ironies that the first verse of the German anthem was removed for the being perceived as violent

i couldn't be bothered looking up all the differences between britain, great britain, the uk and explaining what the commonwealth is. if it helps you, as you didn't know much before you looked everything up, God Save the Queen is used 99% of the time as the national anthem of the uk.

as for the US, I really hate Suza, so most of the national anthems from that time, really irk me.

can i assume you meant john phillip sousa and not conrad suza (the only composer named suza i can think of)? if so, did you mean anthems written in his lifetime (1854-1932), or just during the years he was active as a composer?

quiet surprised that some people "like" the german anthem,
its not very interesting and 2/3 of it are forbidden cause they refer to places that dont belong to the country

however i recently heard some people on radio saying the east german anthem was one of the best, the text certainly is (well- i havent bothered to conduct a survey on that but most of what i can think of tends to be rather militarized)

The national anthem I remember most enjoying was that of the Conch Republic (Key West, FL, USA) which seceded (briefly) from the US before surrendering (it was getting towards happy hour, I believe).

The anthem, if I remember correctly, was played on Sousaphone and Kazoo. I can't recall the words, as I was several Margaritas past the point of discretion (but the sun was above the yardarm). I remember that this glorious example of musical pulchritude brought tears to my eyes, at least until I needed a refill of my Margarita glass.

I think you're right about the composer. It was part of the curriculum when I was studying music at school but I needed to be careful when playing at home 'coz it brought back unfortunate memories for my Dad of his experiences during WWII.
