Where are the backend config files of the GUI Fonts

Hi all

in Ubuntu 8.04.3, I changed the fonts via GUI tool: apperance->fonts. at the beginning, I think the GUI should write the new config into /etc/fonts. but it did not, the files under /etc/fonts did not change at all.

so ,does anyone can tell me where is the backend configration file of the Font config. tks a lot.
