I haven't used Linux in a little while and I'm wondering if there's anything new and interesting out for the platform? Around the time I stopped using Ubuntu full-time, Shutter and Gloo-something, a quick-look for Gnome were the neatest new toys.

Though it's not a new program, KOffice 2.0 came out not too long ago. I dig the layout and feel of Kword.

I'm also curious about other programs - I can't think of any.

I'd put bilbo blogger on the list if you like to blog.

Given that BlogTK seems to have been abandoned...again...this is definitely cool.

well i for one have said "oh wow!" to a LOT of Linux applications, then again i have only been using it for about 3 months so everything about it is new and "cool" in my eyes.

It's being developed once again (as of August 2009). Which surprised me. Again.

It's still got no feature parity with bilbo, however.

OTHER COOL PROGRAMMES

OpenShot if you like to edit videos easily.
Caffeine for just pure "omg-that-is-such-a-great-idea"
gnome-do BZR with it's fancy pants GMail docklet

errm... it may sound like a really awful plug, but as soon as i come across a new app that i like - i blog about it @ omgubuntu.co.uk

Aard Dictionary (http://aarddict.org/) offline reader for wikipedia. install aarddict from the ubuntu package on their home page (not in repos yet), then download the wikipedia file in you language (english is the biggest, 7GB so you use bittorrent). then you can read wikipedia from anywhere.

Synapse (http://synapse.im/), though still in the early phases of development, looks very promising. I would be happier if the development were a little faster and easier to follow, but then again, I'm only an armchair spectator so I can't complain.

XBMC, a Media Center application. You can read more about it at:

Linux is not about "oh wow!" applications

Given the popularity of things like Compiz Cube, I beg to differ. Linux is about whatever the user wants it to be about, that's why linux us great.

If you are a jabber user:
Synapse (expect crashes, it is far from being ready, but it is really cool)

XBMC is very cool, however, if you're running 64 bit - forget it. Don't even bother mentioning it on their forums either. They will be praising the 32 bit Gods for the rest of their lives.

Wrong. Linux is as bleeding edge you can get. Everyone can try, test out and help on new things, so you won't have to wait for every major proprietary update.

If you like XBMC check out boxee

It's pretty sweet. And even though the debs are only 32 bit you can run them on 64 bit.

Who said BloGTK was abandoned? :)

BloGTK 2.0 is in testing, and you can try it now. Go to the website to learn more.

I had not heard of Bilbo Blogger before, but it looks amazingly impressive. I'm going to have to check it out and see how it works.

Oh wow, I apologize for that. For some reason, my RSS reader hasn't been updating your feed, which is how I generally keep track of software I'm interested in.

Looks good...will it get the ability to upload images? That's the main reason (to me, anyway) Windows Live Writer beats out almost every blogging client I've tried.

No need to apologize, it's only been back in regular development for a month or so.

Image uploading isn't set for 2.0, but is on the roadmap for the next release. Once 2.0 is done, there will be a modern codebase to work off of -- meaning it'll be much easier to do cool stuff down the road.
