I set up a second display (LCD TV) for my 64bit 8.10, and was trying to set it up so that each display would be a separate ubuntu workspace.
I followed advice found in a thread to use the "separate X screens" option instead of TwinView when configuring the Nvidia Settings for the new display.
When i restarted to apply the changes, it booted into low-graphics mode, and now when I try to open Nvidia settings, it tells me "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."
When I do this, nothing changes.
I don't really need the separate X screens, and would be happy just to get back to my usual high resolution TwinView settings

here's my current xorg.conf:

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder58) Wed Nov 26 11:21:13 PST 2008

Scratch all that, actually.
Just after i posted i found a comment in my xorg.conf about changes that had been made to the file and a terminal command to revert it to the original. I can't remember the command now, but if anyone else is having the same problem, i suggest oppening up xorg.conf ("sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf") and looking for that comment line towards the top
hope this can be helpful to anyone with a similar problem
