It was suggested that I upgrade to the latest version of the Kipi plugins (0.6.0) to fix a problem exporting to Gallery2 in digiKam. Only thing is I am not sure on how to go about doing this and if it would have an effect on other dependencies.

I am not aware of the 0.6.0 fixing the exporting to Gallery2 in digiKam, but if you have an error that runs with the digiKam you can find this in /var/logs/message and locate the error with digiKam and paste it here for further support.

Here is the full source of packages that follow (include) with the kipi-plugins package: http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/kde/kipi-plugins

The recommendation to upgrade the Kipi plugin came via one of the digiKam developers via the KDE bug report list. No errors were reported in the log file related to digiKam. That link appears to be invalid.
