I am having the most difficult time. I am trying to add a separator between my Start button and the Shutdown button and also between the shutdown button and the Show Desktop icon.

If I add a separator to the panel, it only shows up to the right of the program icons and I cannot move it over without squishing the program icons.

Ideas?

Unlock all the applets that are between the separator and the place where you want to move it. Just right-click the applets and make sure "Lock to Panel" is unselected.

To unlock the Window List-applet you need to click on the handle at the far left end of that applet (as clicking on tasks themselves would only bring up me nu for that window, not the applet).

Ahh, got it!

I needed to "unlock" each of the icons on the panel. I had unlocked the launch button and the shutdown button but not the individual icons there - show desktop, thunderbird, firefox and virtualbox.
