What is your favorite flag for design and aesthetics only?

(Please leave nationalism and politics out but feel free to post any kind of flag that is appropriate; country, state, fantasy and make believe flags just be sure they meet the CoC (http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php?page=policy))

My top two favs are:

1. Saint Pierre and Miquelon (territorial overseas collectivity of France) - Collectivité territoriale de Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon

http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=127266&d=1251980871https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/flags/flagtemplate_sb.html

2. South Korea

http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=127375&d=1252047276https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/flags/flagtemplate_ks.html

Out of those two I would have to say I like Saint Pierre and Miquelon (territorial overseas collectivity of France) flag the best:

The Union Jack is the name of the UK flag when it's on a ship, otherwise it is called the Union flag.

+1 for Libya (Can't believe so many people beat me to it).

All other flags are just bloat if you ask me. Libya's is simple and easy on the mind, no need to think about what all those criss-crossing lines mean or how many stars, and what they stand for etc.

You could at least point him here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America#Display ing_the_flag) so he (and others) can see both sides of the issue.

In my opinion, a good national flag is both distinct and simple.

Examples of indistinct flags: Irish flag vs Italian flag. Green, white, & orange vs green, white & red. Basically an Irish flag can look like a faded Italian flag, and an Italian flag can look like an over-dyed Irish flag. I mean no offense to either nation, just that their flags are too similar.

As for my favorite... Well, I have to admit bias towards the United States flag. Not simple, but familiar. Other than that, the flag of Japan is very simple, and highly symbolic.

Yeah let's not turn this thread into a racism debate, but I have lived not only in North Florida, but South Carolina as well. Undoubtedly some people can allow the confederate flag to represent their feelings of fondness for the South and its culture - which is cool, but for most people it also represents racism and oppression. Some like it for this reason, and some (like me) dislike it for this reason. If you thinks it's just a benign symbol for "State's Rights", you are deluded.

That's all I'll say about this, because I love the idea of this thread, and don't want it derailed :).

America, **** yeah!

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/6152/unitedstatesflag.gif

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner forever shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Seriously speaking, my favorite flag is Croatia's.

Also, why is the US flag Red, white, and blue?

Depends on who you ask.

Apart from the numbers of stars and stripes representing the number of current and original states, respectively, and the union with its stars representing a constellation, there is no legally defined symbolism to the colors and shapes on the flag. However, folk theories and traditions abound.

Even though they are the enemy in most things (bloody ashes... blech!) the Union Jack is the best flag of all. It is simple yet bold, completely unmistakable. Hell, we keep it on own own flag just because it looks so good. And it goes with everything good, see......

Wallonia is the predominantly French-speaking southern region of Belgium. Although it is a regional flag and not a country flag, I like it.

My favorite flag as far as aesthetics and design does not belong to a country, but rather a state. I've always thought that Maryland had the best looking flag out of all the states in the U.S.

I also like old (WW2 era) Japanese flag, I think it looks much nicer then it is now.

Bhagwa or the saffron colour denotes renunciation or disinterestedness. Our leaders must be indifferent to material gains and dedicate themselves to their work. The white in the centre is light, the path of truth to guide our conduct. The green shows our relation to (the) soil, our relation to the plant life here, on which all other life depends. The "Ashoka Chakra" in the centre of the white is the wheel of the law of dharma. Truth or satya, dharma or virtue ought to be the controlling principle of those who work under this flag. Again, the wheel denotes motion. There is death in stagnation. There is life in movement. India should no more resist change, it must move and go forward. The wheel represents the dynamism of a peaceful change.

No that's the confederate flag...

After doing some research it appears that the Union Jack (or the flag posted and removed) was never the confederate flag or any one of the flags of the Confederate States of America.
It was a CSA Navy flag only.
The Second Confederate Navy Jack is a rectangular precursor of the battle flag, usually about 5×3 feet. The blue color in the saltire (the diagonal cross) is much lighter than in the battle flag, and it was flown only on Confederate ships from 1863 to 1865.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America
