allright, Im not smart when it comes to hardware. In fact, not at all :)

Im looking to get some more ram, but the original motherboard documentation for my box is nowhere to be found. How can I figure out what kind of ram I have ?

I use a wonderful program called Everest... I dont know if it has a linux version or if it will run in WINE, but you might be able to try.

What motherboard and chipset do you have? Do you at least remember that? If so post it and then we might be able to tell you exactly what RAM you use. CPU information would help also.

You could always power the machine down and pull out the RAM and see what the sticker says also.

I dont really remember any details, as I didnt buy the computer.

Its a Dell Dimension 2350. I poked around the Dell website, but they've stopped selling that one, quite a while ago.

Just shut down the machine and pull out the RAM. Look at the sticker or label on it and it will tell you exactly what kind of RAM it is.

Edit: I found out exactly what kind of RAM it uses. It uses PC 2100 (DDR 266) with a cas latency of 2.5 184 pin RAM. It took me 2 seconds to find by using crucials tool posted by ssam on this thread.

Why go to all the bother of taking your RAM out?
Just run "lshw" in terminal... :D

OMFG

I have a dell dimension 2350!!

I bought this ram from newegg: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820141174

it's 256mb.. but it says what kind of ram you need there: "184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 266 (PC 2100)"
I found it on the dell website.. support.dell.com

oh yeah, because I'm feeling nice, here's the user guide for the dimension 2350: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2350/
