Another quick one: how do i get a shadow on the bottom gnome panel? It looks really lame compared to the top panel.

Are you trying to do this with Compiz or Emerald?
If so, go into the Emerald Theme Manager (System > Preferences > Emerald Theme Manager). When it comes up, click on the "Edit Theme" tab and then on the "Frame/Shadows" tab.
Under Shadows, make sure that x-offset and y-offset are set to 0 and increase the radius of the shadow.
