View Full Version : [ubuntu] 9.04 Installiation hangs on low-specs machine

For the past several days I've been trying to install Ubuntu 9.04 on a rather old, low specs machine, to no avail. The standard installation disk hangs in various places, and the alternate disk hangs just after the "starting the disk partitioner" step. I can't produce the specs right now, but I do know that it has a Pentium 2 with 64Mb ram. I should be able to get the rest later, but any help available with the given information would be greatly appreicated.
Thanks.

The published minimum memory for installing is 256MB, even for the alternate disk.

There are a lot of other Linux distros for really low-spec machines like puppy, dsl (damn small linux), etc, but I'm not sure what luck you'll have with those either.

Here's a pretty good list of distributions.

So then the documentation lies I guess. Oh well, thanks for the help any way.

I don't think the documentation lies exactly. The minimal install it refers to is a barebones installation that gives you a command line and not much else. You can then go on to install X from there, if your computer has enough ram. If that's what you're interested in, then try following the instructions here: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal

Are you using the right CD for this? You need the alternate CD for that kind of installation.

A quick search revealed this too:

I've actually tried this, and it hung just after starting partitioner, but I will try the other guide.
