I am new to Ubuntu so may be this is a silly question. I am trying to make a portable version of Ubuntu on a pen drive. I have downloaded the live image (9.04), I have created a bootable image on a USB drive and tweaked the settings to make it work with my hardware (Dell Latitude D630), now I need to make those changes permanent so I have them next time I reboot. How do I do this? Thanks

What you are looking for is a "persistent" install. The Live USB Creator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Live_USB_creator) on the Ubuntu Live CD can make one for you.
This post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1193680) lists many alternatives, including my preference, a full install to the USB drive.
