Moved to Arch Linux for the time being. Even though I was able to move over my OpenBox config from Ubuntu, I decided to drop Elegant Mist (custom Elegant Brit) and the OpenBox theme to start over from scratch, mainly because of problems with pixmap and rulers.

Sooo... I was bored... and started tinkering with my system after reading up on Gnome 3.0 and the direction it's going.

Decided it wasn't for me, so figured I'd give KDE a try. Took some doing, but figured out the necessities of it, and for now, this is my desktop:

It's KDE 4.3 (I think... lol) on Jaunty, with the Slim Glow plasma theme (oxygen is blue... lolwut) and just a couple of widget thingies to keep things organized...

Ideally, I'd also change my icons, but have yet to find a nice set and making my own would be a disaster.

Yeah, I added the PPA, did the whole update and dist-upgrade bit... I mean, Im relatively new to the whole KDE thing, as I generally preferred Gnome or Openbox... perhaps I missed something?

-edit- So... ironically, I know I did all that... I mean, yeah I had been drinking, and it was 2 AM, but I have the whole terminal log to prove Im not insane... (or well that I did the ppa, and update/upgrade bits)...

But I do it again just now, and... it updates all the KDE stuff. /facepalm

Please take a look, its pretty damn sick. Ive got the options for the program showing up top, like Macs. Really neat looking. The other good thing is that its completely functional so it doesn't just look good, it also makes it fast to work on. All my apps are up top, if one freezes, Ive got an Xkill launcher ( X on the right), brightness adjusting applet, weather, spotlight search type thing called Deskbar and some other stuff. Really loving this setup.

Can anyone recommend me a theme that might match it better?

Ok... so my last post was maybe a bit pre-emptive...after all, still getting used to KDE.

So here's mine (at least for the remainder of the week).

DE: KDE 4.3 (Jaunty Backport~)
Plasma: Arezzo
QT: Sculpture
Icons: Black and White (KDE-Look)
WP: Mio, from K-On!

Still need to tweak a couple of the icons... and I see having a Folder View for icons is quite popular...

On a completely unrelated note, has anyone tried the STasks Plasmoid from KDe-Look?

Yes, I liked it a lot but since my update to the latest KDE version they don't work any more for me unless it's been updated which in that case I would have to check them out again.

Well, this is pretty simple I use pilgrim theme, but made the colours of the boxes slightly minty inside.

Wallpaper - simple and easy to see icons on top (yes, I like to use my desktop for folders also)

icons are nuoveXT.2.2

I seem to have stuck with this for a while now, so satisfies my tastes and is practical.

I don't really like the docks, instead I have a panel on the left and right (since I use widescreen, makes more sense than having panels on top or bottom).

You may notice I have the frequency of each of my two CPUs (just for reassurance that they are both working nicely, also allows me to save energy by limiting max frequency)

Also have System Monitor aplet on the left (blue=processors, red= network). Network monitor is really useful as sometimes my modem seems to slow down, so I can see if I am actually receiving data.

Applet above shutdown icon (on right) actually allows timed shutdown after [user input] number of minutes... which I love cos I often listen to radio at night and get my computer to shutdown when program finishes.

It's the widget theme Bespin that now supports ARGB transperency. the transperency

shows up in all apps/programs opened. see below link to enable it.

Happy for the coming "openoffice.org-style-oxygen- package". Koffice is Final soon, but I think more time for more features will be need. Wonderful - I like KDE again - I am surprised ... ;)

I used dictionary.com for nearly a year before finding thefreedictionary.com. I'm on broadband. Even when I used adblock, it took far too long to do a simple word lookup. I just visited the site again and while it's not as bad as it used to be, it still takes too long: around 5-6 seconds before my results are readable, double that for the page to finish loading. By comparison, thefreedictionary can load the whole page is little over 2 seconds.

Also, The Free Dictionary doesn't even give a proper definition for that word! It assumes you mean a proper name.

By comparison, thefreedictionary can load the whole page is little over 2 seconds.Well, I really don't know what to say about that. I don't share the same experience as you do and I am also on broadband internet. :?

Anyway...

So my screen shot of the default GNOME desktop looks like OS X? Wow. I am using KDE 4.3 "forever", by the way. I still have love for GNOME too, sometimes it feels good to take a break and try something differnt.

If you're talking about my old screen shots from months ago of GNOME, then I was working on an OS X project. I still had KDE 4 as a desktop environment. Then I tried KDE 4.3, and decided to use that as my default "forever". Doesn't mean I still don't use GNOME and I really don't appreciate you being on my back about my decisions.

Wow. For a self-confessed troll who likes to 'bait people into justifying their worthless existence' (something to that effect), you don't seem to have built up much of a tolerance for your own poison. Of course, I wish I could take credit for your descending into a spiral of defensive self-justification but the truth is, you just misunderstood my joke and subsequent exaggeration.

Also when I boot, my 2 top panels switch position with each other. The panel with the window list loads up top and the shortcuts panel underneath it. However I like the panel with the shortcuts on the top and the window list panel underneath. Any ideas to make the panel stick in that position? Keep in mind, they are both up top, just one underneath the other.

What theme is that? And what mouse cursor?

The theme is compiz murrina (see gnome-look.org) with a change of the color scheme (it originally has red scrollbars and looks darker thus causing a lousy effect on openoffice toolbars, if I remember well).

The cursor is in the repos (see oxygen-cursor-theme and the package with the extra colors).

As for the wallpaper (asked by another forum member) I cannot remember anymore where I found it. I think it was in photo forum.
