VNC not working with inputs

I'm trying to setup VNC for graphics in Ubuntu. I'm running the default remote desktop application and am able to log in and see the desktop but it hasn't responded to any inputs.

Any suggestions? I'm not overly experienced with Linux so let me know what information would help.

It looks like the issue is actually that inputs are going across to the server but the client is not updating as I can see changes in the server when using the client but the client image stays frozen.

I found information on the issue when I searched for the client not updating, now it just looks like I need to figure out which fix works...

Problem resolved by deactivating visual effects, just had to know how to form the question...
