Unchecking "Automatically remember running applications after log out" will still remember and restore them, so one has to manually delete the specific files (God forbid he's new to Linux or he'll pull his hair out).

Restoration of the applications pays no respect to the state of the window (position, size, whether it was minimized to tray)
I remember the issue dates back to... Dapper (?); it's at least 2 years old anyway.
