Well have you tried using a Vista recovery disc, reinstalling that, and than reinstalling Ubuntu with the disk?

If you don't have a Vista recovery disc
go here:

hope i am of any help
if your worried about losing files just dont reformat the hard drive, just click on set up vista

To the above suggestion I add the following thoughts:

Make backups if you can before doing a "clean" install.
Using original Windows disks or recovery partitions is usually best, followed closely by recovery disks you've made using software preinstalled by the manufacture of your computer. (Aviud pirated Windows disks if you can due to possible legal hassles and the occasional bout of malware.)
