Once you get past the "lol pokemon" stereotype you'll notice it is quite a deep and complex strategy game.

Hundreds of combinations of move, natures, abilities, and specialisations (training not only increases your pokemon's stats, but depends on what pokemon it fought it also determines which stats increase more) and their interactions make it much more interesting then most fighters.

Check out some of the stuff smogon.com for a site dedicated totally to cracking the finer points of the game

Probably Charizard or Machamp :D I had a great combo with those two, the fire power of Charizard could take down even Water types of the same level, and Machamp was so hyped up on power boosters that nothing could hit harder or faster :D Talk about taking on the Elite Four with just two Pokemon, all KOs :D

i took them with JUST charizard, level 100 though, and fissure is really cheap, but it works when you're in a tough spot.

Are you talking about the red and blue or some of the later ones because as I remember I could beat the entire game with just one pokemon if I did enough grinding. Maybe your talking about multiplayer battles? I remeber those could get pretty intense :D

Anyway, my favorite is Abra for sure, catching him is probably the hardest thing to do in the game :P I've always prefered Dragon warrior monsters :D

The main single player games are designed to be accessible not hard so it's usually a stroll.

The elite four, for example, is hyped in the games but they're not designed to be extremely hard.
All their teams have glaring weaknesses as they tend to use one type and you are free to level up higher than they are, etc.

However, there are *many* possibilities inherent in the game's design that other people (and to some extent computer controlled 'battle tower' opponents) exploit.
So it's really after the game's officially finished that you get to try some of the deeper stuff like the battle tower.

Still, Pokemon is mostly fun for people who like to explore and collect.
Definitely not everyone's cup of tea but it's good for a few million.
