Hi,
I am very new to posting on this forum, even tho i have a forum account for long time i don't remember posting.
Any ways today i have installed ubuntu 9.04 x64 bit edition. So far so good. But I can't seem to be able to use the nvidia 180 driver.
I go to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers and when i select the 180 version it won't work when i reboot the computer.
I am using a Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT

Maybe you could try to install latest driver manually. First download nvidia linux 64bit driver from http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_185.18.36.html
Then read my instructions from this post

It didn't work. It came up with a couple of errors. I answered yes to all questions in the installer. But at the next boot it didn't managed to start X.

I am having similar issued with the nVidia driver.
Cryptic error message after installing it.
Same exact thing happened with 8.04 and a nVidia 6800GT
Now I am trying 9.04 and a nVidia 8800GTS
I had hoped this was fixed, but I guess it's back to Windows again...

I don't understand why it's so. I update manually nvidia driver on my computer every time there's new one and I never had problem. I always chose to recompile the driver for my machine and not to import any previous setting.
