gnome session save

Is there a way to get gnome to remember window position on logout? I tried gnome-session-save, but when I log in, I get all my apps dumped in a heap on the first desktop.

Also, it doesn't seem to work at all for some applications. Is there really no way around this? By the way ignore the signature- it's for my mythtv box. This post is for a run of the mill desktop computer.
