Installation Problem

I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 desktop on an HP laptop. After the installation was completed, I restarted my computer. After I log in with my username and password, all that I get is a black screen with the mouse pointer and nothing else. What could be the problem?

Most definitely appears to be a display adapter problem ( graphics card ). Bring up your system using Live CD and examine the display adapter setting. How it is set there. You may have to change something there.
