Hello! I have heard that latex is better for writing documents.I am now in Athens,Greece where I will study the greek language for approx. 9 months, because I got admitted in a Psychology and Philosophy programme in the University.

I have installed lyx, is that everything that I need to get started writting documents in greek and exporting them?

I wouldn't use lyx, but rather texlive and a decent text editor (gedit has a plugin for latex which might make it a little easier in the beginning).

Hello! I have heard that latex is better for writing documents.

Latex is better for writing structured documents, like a thesis or a book. For something like a birthday card it can still be used, but it's probably not the best option.

For Greek in Latex try this: http://a.physics.upatras.gr/~mplekos/write-greek-latex.html

I've just googled it, so I don't know how good it is.

Personally I think a gimp mask is not a good starting point for those starting out in latex....

:lolflag:

The not so short intro to LaTeX (linked above) Worked great for me.

For something like a birthday card it can still be used.

For things like cards you would be better off with ConTeXt or plain TeX.

There's nothing wrong with using LyX in the beginning, but you'll probably want to move beyond it at some point. I started with LyX myself, and gradually started hand-coding more stuff, before moving to Gedit, and then Vim (both of which have excellent plugins for LaTeX :) ).

This might also be of some help: Gentle Introduction to LaTeX -- Modern Greek Translation (http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/gentl-gr.html#Download)

For me the best Latex editor is Gedit with the latest Latex plug-in (0.2. rc2). It has auto-completion, view of a document structure, it can generate dvi-previews with links to the text you're editing, it even can embed the R scripts.
Very nice and clean editor.
As for Lyx. It's nice, but I wouldn't say it's 100% Latex compatible... It's just "simplified Latex".

Hi Phreaker,

some of the documents linked here could also be useful for you: Introductions, Guides and Tutorials for LaTeX (http://texblog.net/latex-link-archive/introduction-guide/).

i am a novice myself, too. so far i have been pretty happy with these:

gedit
gedit latex plugin
http://tobi.oetiker.ch/lshort/lshort.pdf (The Not So Short Introduction to LaTEX 2ε)

i am clueless about the greek latex packages and spellcheck though. also like most people i dont advise lyx. it might seem simple in the beginning but can make things more complex as the document gets bigger and if you use svn and other people dont use lyx.
