I'm new to linux, and want to use the cool "cube desktop" feature. I am running kubuntu 8.04.

You can use the Compiz Config Manager to get the cube and other nifty effects.

(By the way, I wasn't aware that you could actually use Compiz in Kubuntu until just now...)
