I'm not sure where to start. A while ago, my computer was running smoothly, and everything was fine. I am running an older 600 Mhz Pentium 3, but it's worked fine under Xubuntu. Then, a few months ago, things started slowing down. First, Firefox would freeze for a bit at startup. I paid no mind to this. Then, other Gnome-based apps started showing signs of wear. DOSBOX first indicated this to me, as all games used to run smoothly, but now have major lag.
So I installed GNOME on top of Xfce, and it got bearable. Firefox returned to its normal state, but there are still some apps that are slow, especially Dosbox.
Is this a common problem? My main window manager is KDE, and I'm running Xubuntu.
