Using a Live CD to boot but run off a USB

Ok a friend of mine is tring to set up a USB drive, but his computer/laptop doesn't have USB bootable bios. So I'm wondering is there anyway to use a live cd to boot the computer actually run from the USB instead so that the CD doesn't need to stay in the drive?
