..... a USB enabled BIOS. My old 2005 laptop cannot boot from a USB, so I had the idea of booting into grub and trying to boot it from there. It seems THAT did not work either, it didn't realize a drive was in there, my other computer that can boot from usb, can also boot from USB with grub. But alas, I don't know if it's possible. Do you know another way?

It is possible, although I don't know exactly how. Distros like Damn Small Linux allow "booting" from usb drives by using bootable floppy disks. Maybe you could check their forums for more info.

Does it have a CD drive? Boot from a USB flash drive from a Boot CD (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/category/usb-boot-cds/)
