How many people take advantage of their 64bit CPU?

That is odd. I have been using Ubuntu 64-bit for quite a long time and I have no stability issues.

I have been using 64-bit OS since my second install of ubuntu. Back then, it was hard to find pre-compiled binaries for amd64 ubuntu, almost all software works flawlessly now without compiling anything myself.

I voted "I have a 64bit cpu and use a system optimized for 64bit" but I use 64bit and 32bit OSes. I have more than one PC :)

Wow! From the looks of the poll so far, things really have changed since that 2007 thread. It's pretty much what I expected though. I can't think of any reasons someone would still want to use a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit cpu. Well, unless they are stuck with less than 1 gig of ram. But these days, 1 gig of ram costs less than your average lunch.

The only real difference that I could tell when I switched to 64 bit is that my playstation emulators stopped working. I guess that gives me an excuse to finally replace my nonfunctional PS2 with a PS3.

Sadly I'm still a 32bit CPU user and therefore use a 32bit system.

Read my thread: HOWTO: Java64 with 64-bit Firefox plugin (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1019314)

That should at least give you the Sun version of Java 64-bit, and not the Iced-Tea version.

Oh, and I use 32bit on a 64bit arch.

I have an Acer 5050-3371 Laptop with an AMD 64bit processor.

I run Ubuntu Jaunty 64bit and I am been quite happy with it.

I used to run the 32bit version of Ubuntu on my laptop, but with the current version it's very stable and there is a noticeable increase in speed and general response.

The current plan is to wait till 2011 when the next long term support ubuntu comes out and upgrade.

But maybe I'll do it sooner, on a whim.

Windows 7 - 64-bit
ArchLinux - 64-bit
Ubuntu - 32-bit

Reason for using 32-bit Ubuntu? Memory usage of the 64-bit version is for some reason around 70% higher at boot than that of the ArchLinux counterpart. (both are full-blown Gnome desktops, same services, etc.)

if the hardware is 64-bit, i use 64-bit software.

although i guess you could call an XP virtual machine a 32-bit os on 64-bit hardware. but the virtualbox is 64-bit.

no problems with anything.

I've been using 32-bit since Dapper. My new lappy supports 64-bit but I've held off on Ubuntu 64-bit due to concerns with compatibility with my wifi card. I think I will get the 64-bit version of 9.10, though.

Do your card works out-of-the-box or do you use ndiswrapper? If it works ootb in x86 I think it will work fine on x86_64. You can also try if it works ootb in a LiveCD.

So way back in 1999 I had a DEC Alpha.. ( still do actually different machine though )...

I went into the procfs hax0ring away as kids will do... and among a number of other funny little modifications I made, I increased my jiffies value at boot to something like the equivalent at HZ = 1024 of about 16 years.

What's awesome is how many people said I "made up" my uptime reports because no computer could possibly have an uptime of 16 years as they rolled back to 1 day after about 4 years.

Little did they know, uptime was reporting accurately an incorrect jiffies count.

64 bit could go up to around 16 years of uptime... because it could handle the higher jiffies counts properly.

*sigh*... the good old days.

Depends on how much RAM you have. If 2gb or more, I say go for 64. Why have a 64bit cpu and not use it?

Well I've a question for you guys:
I have amd turion 64 cpu , using acer aspire 5104 with upgraded ram to 4GB. Well the point is: I've seen some graphs over net that x64 is actually slower than x86. And even if this is wrong, can I compile and use x86 applications from source (like windows does) and can I use all apps on getdeb and launchpad?

Yep, DEcemeber 2006 review....and totally not reflective of the current situation.

I would bet that any link that shows 32bit to be faster than 64bit would be a 2004-2008.

Thanks Cascade. 64 bit Feisty (the most recent version tested there) only won 4 out of 7 tests vs 32 bit Feisty, but like you say, it's unlikely to be an accurate representation of the current situation.
It would be great to see more from the guys I quoted near the top of the page.

General nitpick re. a few posts in this thread: ''x86 vs x64'' != ''Ubuntu 32bit vs Ubuntu 64bit''
If you mean ''Ubuntu 32bit vs Ubuntu 64bit'', please don't write ''x86 vs x64''! ;)

It happens.

People tend to think in terms of the OS they use- I've hard many a discussion with people I know, where they have insisted that x86_64 is 'unstable and totally pointless'- they meant windows 64bit (normally vista). BTW, I disagree with that as well- Windows XP64 ran very well when I used it, and AFAIK Win7 64bit is pretty good. The main thing I've heard about problems with was vista 64bit.
