Old laptop HD started making the clicking-noises-of-impending-death. I'm putting in a different HD that had ubunutu on it. (hardy, I think). Want to install XP on it (customer request).

The laptop has all the settings to boot from CD first, but for some reason won't do it. I have an external IDE to USB, so I pull the drive, connect via USB to another and can boot that one from a GPARTED CD.

I can edit the drive table fine, but no combination I try works. I get GRUB error 15, 17, or 22.

I've tried making the drive NTFS, FAT32, boot flag on, boot flag off, formatting partition, not formatting partition. and tried Device > Create partition table.

I decided I better stop and ask before breaking something permanently...

Never mind..that antique bios had external drive enable boot in a different section...
