Hi all, tonight i was feeling like listening to some music, I love power metal and wanted to hear something different now. So i found this folder with Krafterk music on it and thought "hey, is there any geekier music than this??" soooo, here's the question:

First of all, do you know Kraftwerk? what do you think about their music? and, do you know any geekier music??

a little different than what i think you're looking for, but there's something called math rock. its where the instruments are all playing their own timing and rhythms and is really asymmetrical. its sound real wacky, but its cool..i love it

some really good bands that do this is don caballero, toe, and form of rocket...its hard to find it, but when a band does it, you can tell.

Don't forget about "Ethernal flame" by Julia Ecklar & Bob Kanefsky. Check http://www.prometheus-music.com/roundworm.html for music and http://www.songworm.com/lyrics/songworm-parody/EternalFlame.html for lyrics. Really, really good parody! and very geeky indeed = )

Kraftwerk is awesome! Are you listening to their original stuff from the early 70's, or the newer remixed crap?

Here's a vid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m99057ibDAU) of the original version of Autobahn from 1974. You're probably listening to the remix, though, aren't you?

Also, check out a project called Music from the Torah (http://www.research-systems.com/codes/music.html). It's software (Windows based) that takes small passages from the Torah (Old Testament) and converts it to music. They have a link to a sample on the page that sounds pretty awesome. It sounds similar to Kraftwerk style music. The sample isn't very long, but my dad has the full songs.

Kraftwerk are superb.
I've listened to their music ever since I bought Autobahn on vinyl in the 70s.
I was a teenager then and listening to it on headphones, I was completely amazed by the sound of cars driving back and fore through my head.

Well it was back in the days when hi-tech was a pocket calculator with a square root button.

I've got a few of their albums: Autobahn, Radioactivity, Computerworld, The Man Machine, Trans Europe Express and Tour De France.
All excellent.

Gotta love Kraftwerk. IMO Flutter by Autechre has to be the geekiest track ever made though. Here's what it said on the Anti EP sticker:

Warning. Lost and Djarum contain repetitive beats.
We advise you not to play these tracks if the Criminal Justice Bill becomes law.
Flutter has been programmed in such a way that no bars contain identical beats and can therefore be played at both forty five and thirty three revolutions under the proposed new law. However we advise DJs to have a lawyer and musicologist present at all times to confirm the non repetitive nature of the music in the event of police harassment.

Important.
By breaking this seal, you accept full responsibility for any consequential action resulting from the product's use, as playing the music contained within these recordings may be interpreted as opposition to the Criminal Justice and Public Order Bill.

+1!!!

But I'd stipulate that the Genesis has to be pre-1976. I'd also recommend Gentle Giant to anyone who enjoys the above.

great list, though I'm not so into genesis.

Genesis tragically turned in to a Genesis copy-band when Gabriel left, and then did it again when Collins left. Last I checked they were a Genesis-copy-band-copy-band. They quickly stopped being 'prog' and embraced the 'pop' (or, more specifically, the MOR.) Very tragic, but I understand Gabriel and Collins aren't the easiest people to work with.

And Mike Rutherford went and did Mike + The Mechanics.... VERY VERY tragic ;;

BTW, what's geeky about Dragonforce?

well one of their major influences is video games. thats pretty geek.
they do the whole Iron Maiden Mythology/history thing. kinda like a musical D&D game. same allegation as early rush before neal pert started doing the song writing (because he hated not having any girls at his shows).
They are music for musicians, and music geeks are as geeky as most.
they did a heavy metal version of pachabel's cannon. what more need be said?

._. what's geeky about doing a metal version of pachelbel? then Dragonland is geeky because of the Rondo alla Turca version?, or Alexi Laiho with the L'estate presto thing?

Then I should remove my Capriccio 24 version from youtube ._.

I LOVE heavy metal. Iron Maiden, Slayer, Pantera, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, KISS and Disturbed are ALL FREAKING AWESOME.

I love 80's music, and yes I realize that Disturbed is not from the 80's but still.
