I just did an upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10, then to 9.04 over the course of a few days.

During the first few minutes of using 9.04, I noticed that some of the panel icons wouldn't display until I hovered. Then after a short time they wouldn't show until I clicked. Then they wouldn't show even if clicked.

I also noticed that the fonts were messed up. Some of the characters were chinese characters (I use en-us) and others were just blurred with a similarly colored or darker solid background.

I figured it was something corrupted with the upgrade. So I decided to do a clean installation.

SAME PROBLEM! This doesn't have a problem when I use 8.04 or 8.10.

Right now, the "D" in "Done" on the statusbar of this Firefox window is grayed out.

With both the disappearing icons (panel and desktop) and the blurred or wrongly localized fonts get worse over time.
