View Full Version : Help Required - New "Icebuntu" Logo

August 26th, 2009, 12:00 PM
Hello all, I need some help!

I'm currently developing Icebuntu - but it has now come to pass that the name will need to change.

I think I have settled on the name spri. It's derived from the English word Spry which means fast or quick. The website will be sprilinux.com

What I need now is a logo. You can see the old logo in my avatar, and as much as I love it I'm afraid it has to go. So - could someone design one for me on the theme of "fast" and importantly, with the same colours as the one to my right? The current logo has the following codes for the colours

The ice:
the ice itself-#00ffff
highlights-#00aad4

Circle of Friends:
lightest-#00ffcc
medium-#00aad4
darkest-#0044aa

I'm completely open to anything anyone can come up with here, anything interesting that will make me say "wow" - I'll probably rebuild the next build completely from scratch as a result of the name change. Thanks for anybody who makes a logo!

Let's see...

Xubuntu = Dark blue Ubuntu logo with XFCE mouse inside
Lubuntu = Dark blue Ubuntu logo with LXDE logo inside

So maybe Icebuntu = Light blue Ubuntu logo with IceWM's three peaks logo inside?

Yeah, I made it with a transparent background and stuck the dark gray background in to display it here.

I think the association with ubuntu is a good thing! Because people know how stable and well supported it is.

I was thinking something with a spri fly. Small, light, and you think it's dead but then suddenly it wakes up and flys off.

I contacted canonical and asked for permission, and never heard a reply. It's rather disappointing, there are no adverts on my site, I'm not making any profit and I was trying to stick as closely to Ubuntu's theme and principles as possible. The logo looked good, the theme looked good and wallpaper was attractive.

I was having second thoughts about continuing, but the Alpha has been downloaded a staggering 1240 times, so it seems the demand is there.

Oh, now that is just disappointing man! Just get someone else to design the logo, etc. and you should just focus on getting a beta release out sooner rather than later......

Don't worry about looks.....people who use it couldn't care less about the look of the thing!

Just a little piece of advice to those who want to help, but lack experience in graphical design; you might want to design the logo using Inkscape rather than Gimp, because of its very nature as a vector image editor. As Gimp produces rasterized images, they can't really be resized without losing image quality.

From here

http://www.ubuntu.com/aboutus/trademarkpolicy

Canonical owns a number of trademarks and these include UBUNTU, KUBUNTU, EDUBUNTU, and XUBUNTU. The trademarks are registered in both word and logo form. Any mark ending with the letters UBUNTU or BUNTU is sufficiently similar to one or more of the trademarks that permission will be needed in order to use it. This policy encompasses all marks, in word and logo form, collectively referred to as “Trademarks”.

the Trademark is used in a way that makes it clear that your project is a development effort related to the Ubuntu source, but that the software you are working upon is not in fact Ubuntu as distributed by the Ubuntu project. The approved naming scheme to facilitate this is through designation “Remix”. For instance, a new ISO image which has been packaged special tools for software developers could be called “Ubuntu, Developers Remix”, or an image was has been created with Thai language packs could be called "Ubuntu Thai Remix". Words such as "Edition" and "Version" should be avoided, as they have specific meaning within the Ubuntu project. Prefixes, such as “ThaiBuntu” should also be avoided. Any other naming scheme will require explicit permission.

i was talking to some people on IRC and we were starting to wonder... if IceBuntu was a known ubuntu derivative for a while, why did they just now make us change the name?

icebuntu was never an official derivative, there were plans/hopes for it to become a derivative in the future, but I'm now convinced that this will never be the case for a few reasons;

The development of IceWM is slow, and the window manager itself is not really something that can be considered "finished"
Official Ubuntu derivatives usually include a Desktop Environment rather than a window manager. (For example the upcoming Lubuntu, which uses the Openbox window manager as part of the LXDE desktop environment
A lot of features are missing from IceWM, and in its default state it isn't easily configured

Still, in its new form I've got creative freedom over what happens next with Spri. Crunchbang Linux has gone on to become one of the most popular Linux distributions, and that is the model I'm aiming for really. If Spri is even half as successful as Crunchbang I'll be extremely happy.

I'm getting the 9.04 release finished first. I'll worry about xsplash when this 9.04 release is done, but thats some way off yet.

I've added an updated screenshot to the Spri wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spri)

The domain change is currently being processed, so it'll be www.sprilinux.com within the next few days.

If anyone can create a usplash within the next week it would be greatly appreciated, as that is the final nail in the coffin for the beta release.
