Brand new install borked

Fresh install of Ubuntu. The proprietary video driver won't activate (or doesn't show that it does) but when I restart to finish installation it crashes.

When I go and open update manager it doesn't ask me for a password. When I click on "install updates" the button doesn't do anything.

How did this happen?

I don't understand. You say the installed system crashes, and next you are talking about Update Manager as though you have a working system.

It doesn't crash, it just won't enable the restricted driver and if I open update manager and click on install updates it will just animate the button but won't install it. I can't give you any output as I have already wiped it and tried again. I suppose I should have printed some output for the benefit of others but I really had to get it working yesterday.
