I don't understand why this happens, my graphics always get messed up after I finally get it to where I am happy with it.

It works fine for a few days, I shut down my pc and when I turn it on it still works fine. then again when i turn it off and back on again everything is messed up. I havent updated anything after I installed the drivers....

Also Is there a fix for ATA soft reset errors???

briantoumbs
August 26th, 2009, 05:49 PM
MSI NX8600GT Twin Turbo GeForce 8600 GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3

I never have been able to get that driver to work, so I always downloaded it off Nividia's website. Ihad this one running, 185.18.31

brian try adding this repo fom this site.

http://www.avenard.org/media/Ubuntu_Repository/Ubuntu_Repository.html

if you have jaunty installed do in terminal

Add the signing GPG key

wget http://www.avenard.org/files/ubuntu-repos/ubuntu-repos.key && sudo apt-key add ubuntu-repos.key && rm ubuntu-repos.key

Add repository.

For Jaunty (Ubuntu 9.04)

echo "deb http://www.avenard.org/files/ubuntu-repos jaunty release" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/avenard.list

you should get a prompt from update manager, run the update and reboot.

problems you may encounter' the previous versions of the driver may not get fully uninstalled, if that's the case open nvidia settings' it should give you instructions on what command to run, simply reboot once again.

it is important to know' when installing the nvidia driver from nvidia's site manually' a kernel update will break your graphics driver, doing it the way i described will prevent this and you will always get the latest version via system updater.

The update worked and now the better graphics are working again but it keeps putting me in 1024x768 every time it starts up. Also it says I am using a CRT under Nvidia X server settings.

This is he xorg.conf file

in terminal do

gksu nvidia-settings

change to it's actual resolution and save to xconfig.

you needed to access nvidia settings with higher privileges in order to make the settings stick.

after the changes the resolution shouldn't change after restarting.

ignore the crt thing, it will not make any difference if it said lcd.

inobe
August 27th, 2009, 05:31 AM
if the crt thing gets under your skin' you can report the issue to nvidia.

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678

canonical/ ubuntu cannot fix that, it is not opensource, it is a proprietary driver and the source is closed.

briantoumbs
August 27th, 2009, 05:38 PM
Ok thank you I will do the gksu nvidia settings and change the resolution that way, every thing else has worked perfectly.

briantoumbs
August 27th, 2009, 06:56 PM
Yes it worked perfect!

Now if someone could convince companies like EA, Ubisoft, bioware etc.. to make their products to run natively on linux. xD

inobe
August 27th, 2009, 07:18 PM
they are convinced but not willing just yet, will it take a few more years and thirty million more linux users "yes"

Would this work with an ATI card as well?
