10 bucks per half year. 100mbit/s up and down. Gotta love how dormnet is connected to the apartments throughout the city ;)

Normally though, prices here are around 30-40 USD/month for a 24mbit/s line.

I pay 45$ a month canadian and get 375KBps download and 100KBps upload. (In ISP terms that is 3Mbit download and 800Kbit upload)

Upload matters ALOT to me, as I am almost constantly uploading. If I remember correctly... I have had a torrent running for 24 hours and ive uploaded almost 7GB.

Download also matters, but not as much. Id have 275KBps download and 200KBps upload instead if I could :P

I saw on another site this guy who has 155MB upload. Not 155Mbit, but 155Megabytes per second. Under his avatar it said "Over one terabyte (TB) uploaded in under 50 hours!"

Currently am paying AUD$35 pm for 512K/128K with 8GB free download. from reading the earlier posts, it seems the cost here is a little higher on average than North America and Europe. (and I'm on what is considered a value for money plan in the local broadband forums).
I am thinking about taking up an offer for AUD$50 pm that will give me up to 20Mbps download with 20GB free, but it means I have to give up my current phone connection.

It sucks when you're downloading a television series, but I can download the same amount again for free after 2am, and it's only $3 per GB extra.

One ISP charges 15c per kB excess (which is $150 per GB!!). A guy I know downloaded a F1 Grand Prix that he had missed on TV and it cost him $650! LOL!
It would have been cheaper almost to fly there!

My parents pay $45 CAD for 640kbit up, 5 mbit down cable, with a 15 GB cap. I'm not sure what the rate for exceeding it is...but last month I was 73 GB over the cap (because of my brothers filesharing) and we only got charged about $5 extra. I'd like to get a higher upload rate...but the next best package (which costs $15 more per month) only increases the upload to 1 mbit.

1024kbps download, 386kbps upload. RM88.00 a month. To put things in perspective the price for a single BigMac here in Malaysia cost around RM5.50 and the starting sallary for a fresh graduate engineer is RM1600.00

I guess we still have a lot to improve on the broadband service here.

I have a 10Mbps connection thats included with my uni accommadation. But because of the cofiguration of the network, it can get slow with many people. But them again when its quiet, I downloaded the Ubuntu CD in under 30 minutes.

Next year its a downgrade to 512Kbps when I move out. But it beats my 56Kbps dial-up at home.

Currently (in Belgium) 4mbps down/ 256kbps up, 10GB cap = 25Euros/month

Previously: (Ecuador)
At first: Supposed broadband @ 7.5KBps download, who knows what miserable upload (less than 2 KBps im sure), no cap tho: $80/month (can you believe that?!?!? what a rip-off, lucky my parents payed tho :P ).
Later: radio-wave broadband @ max 90KBps, bad upload, no cap = $72/month. Big improvement, but it was unreliable due to being radio-wave, so it turned off quite regularly. Also, pings to US were about 200-300, so no use at all for online gaming

@School (for about 40comps) the connection was about 25KBps shared between all of them. Imagine what hell it was just trying to search something on google if more then 4 other people were on :P

Ireland has the second highest broadband rates in Northern europe.

lets see... I pay €29.95 per month for a 1MB/sec down and 128k up service. No email or webspace. That is one of the lowest rates in Ireland. Most people in Ireland have to rely on wireless wifi networks, like Irish Broadband or Smart Telecom. They both charge €30-€40 per month and you have to bolt an aerial onto your house. We are actually getting ISP's and telcos pulling out and selling up here as they have decided that the potential userbase of 1.5 million people in the whole country isn't worth it.

DSL Installation - 55euro 66us$

Rental:
Phone Line Rental -13euro 15us$
DSL 192/64kbs - 36euro 44us$
Internet 2GBCap&Shaped- 27euro 33us$

Total: 76euro 92us$ per month !!!

In Umeε, Sweden (north) we have almost monopoly from a company called Kommunicera (allied with Satan himself). Worthless service and only 12 GB/month transfer before extra fees come into effect, but at 10 Mbps ethernet jack in the wall and a 50% student discount this puts me at 20€ setup cost and then 14€/month, which I guess is OK but not good.

Before, SUNET (swedish university network) was providing all of the network connections, so we used to have 10 Mbps without any restrictions for FREE (as in free beer), no setup cost, no monthly fees. But that ended 2 years ago when Kommunicera came in and ruined it all.

Home: using wireless broadband from the local ISP. My individual connection is not limited in any way other than that the bridge on my end is 802.11b only (11Mbps). I have a paraboloic antenna on my roof and the ISP has two towers of which I'm pretty much in the middle but much closer to the one I use. My connection is steady and stable with excellent speeds up and down. I ran my web server from home for a few years on the connection before I started doing hosting for others.

My cost: $0 I was a former employee of the ISP and I am considered a "test site" so I help with changes and reporting of issues and am usually the first to experience a possible change that is to take place and determine if it is successful or not. So basically I don't really have to jack but complain when my speeds or slow, the connection is down, and once and while do some simple troubleshooting and speed tests

Here at work...well lets just say its plenty fast but its about to get a whole LOT faster with a whole lot more bandwidth. We have been working on a major fiber project of which we will become a major POP for Michigan connectivity.

I have DSL. I pay $59.95US per month for 768Kb/s down and 256Kb/s up. I live in a small rural community that has it's own phone company co-op. It was created years ago so that this area could get phone service. I'm one of a few customers who is pushing to have the thing dissolved because it is no longer needed. Verizon supplies phone service just a few miles away and they have DSL for $14.95 per month. I'd like to see them take over our phone service. We don't have cable where I live either. i think it depends where you live compared to the station for DSL, the farther away from the provider's router, the slower the connection  i live in London. is that correct?

However, we are restricted to 4 GB/wk and have to pay $20/mo (transfers going to and from other computers in the University network do not count against the quota). Oh, yeah! 600 KB/s down (4.8 Mbps), about 15-20 kb/s (160 kbps) up.. I pay $50 USD and I live in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States

It takes about 1/2 Hour to download a ~700 mb iso. Most servers stop at around 400 KB/s.
Calculations at top speed say it should take 19 minutes, 54 seconds to download an exactly 700MB file. It usually does not hit max, but each server varies.

@ home in Austria i have a symetric 10Mps connection (actually we have fiber cable in the house, but the 100Mps line costs around 130 €/m) with no up or download limit for 50 €/m. our ISP installed now also a wlan network in the city (quite slow..), what i can use for additional 5€ a month. Cool for the Nokia 770! I think i have to get one now.

Outside the cities without fiber optics (our "post" still has a defacto monopoly, cause they own the "last mile" to the customers and chargre the highest "transport fees" for data running over their cables all over europe. it's unbelievabe expensive here to have a ****** adsl connection. my parents pay these bastards 19 €/month for 364/128 with a total traffic limit (Up & down) of 250 MB. that's just crazy.

Here in South Africa, telecomms is kinda of a monopoly, so we stuck with high fees. Standard package here... you'll pay about ZAR400 per month for the 512K DSL line... that excludes anything else. the next one up is a 1024K for about ZAR700. Then you get your ISP. I charge my clients ZAR200 for 3gigs, and ZAR75 for each gig there after. Uncapped starts at ZAR1500. The fees are controlled by our telecomms providor... and we have been promised another one for years, but still nothing...

Our providor made about $30 billion US the other year in profit, then it laid off 60% of it's staff, and upped it's fees by 15%.

I get wireless though. 128K up and down for ZAR500, flat rate uncapped unshapped... the best value here in South Africa...

My internet provider is AccesKenya
and luckily i have "broadband speeds"(for Kenya...so to say)
this is what they promised us:

During the day: 16 kbps
During the night:64 kbps

What we receive:
during the day: 2 kbps
during the night:7 kbps

They didnt tell us our upload speeds so...
Download speed(during the night):If lucky we get 5-7 kbps...basically that means i have to sleep through my downloads(it takes 8 hours + for a 180 mb file to finish)

And my dad pays $50 for a month(B-I-G ripoff)...
And we have it uncapped...

The prices you quote mean nothing to the international community unless you convert to us dollars or euros. Very few people know how much a Rand is worth...

In school the wireless connection is the bottleneck. It varies between breaks and classes to. When it's a break many starts gaming sucking up all available bandwith, but a ping flood overloads their server

The best was last term when I didn't have to take the english course, got an MVG directly (highest score ) I could sit in the school cafe with some classmates (who also got an MVG directly) while everyone else was with our very boring english teacher. Have a screenshot somewhere showing the transfer window in Opera with ~8 downloads going 2-300 kb/s:mrgreen:

At home 512/128 kb/s for €19/month.

I have a OCR-3 Connection. 1024Mbps down, 768Mbps up. Only $30 a month.

1024mbps = 1024 * 1000000 / 8 = 122.07 Gb/s. Yeah right 122 Gigabytes per second for only $30 a month. More like 1024Kbps which would be 125k/sec.

Just to let you know... your line speed is measured in kbps, while your download is measured in KBps. Notice the difference in Capitals. kb means kilobits, KB means kilobytes. There are 8 bits to a byte... so a 64kbps line will download at a maximum push of 8KB per second. Now remember that you need 10 to 15% head room for packet headers and parity checks, so you should be getting 6.8 - 7.2 Kilo Bytes per second... at best.

Currently am paying AUD$35 pm for 512K/128K with 8GB free download. from reading the earlier posts, it seems the cost here is a little higher on average than North America and Europe. (and I'm on what is considered a value for money plan in the local broadband forums).
I am thinking about taking up an offer for AUD$50 pm that will give me up to 20Mbps download with 20GB free, but it means I have to give up my current phone connection.

hrm... thought i'd be worse off than you here in new zealand.

Currently have a 2mbps/128kbps with 10GB free international and unlimited national traffic for NZ$42.95 with www.xnet.co.nz

it's not that bad considering many linux distros have mirrors nationally including 2-3 for ubuntu, but i'd really like unlimited or more international traffic and higher upload. Currently same plan as me but 512kbps upload is $69.95 - total ripoff!

Hi, It's not all that bad in australia anymore (if you live in a major city anyway). I live in a share house in sydney, and our connection costs AU $60/month (US $46, €35, £24). There are 3 of us, so we each pay $20/month. This allows us a 24576/1024 kb/s download, with a 30GB limit. The connection is throttled to 128/128 kb/s after exceeding 30GB (which we do sometimes). This connection is known as adsl2+ here Australians, so if you live in a major city, do away with adsl (and telstra) and upgrade to 2+. It's cheaper and has a 16x faster download rate and 4x faster upload rate, as well as a better download limit. It's cheaper because the private telephone companies don't have to buy wholesale broadband from telstra anymore.

In New Zealand many people complain about our broadband, which has only really come to the market in the last 3 years, currently for NZ$49.95 per month (probably around US$30 at least I think the last exchange rate I saw was probably ~.67) I get 2mbit/128k with 5gb BW until about 6 months ago that was the fastest you could get and then they released 3.5mbit and now in the last week 7.6mbit has been released... the fastest upload until his week was 512kbit. My plan costs $10 per 5GB extra and for 7.6 mbit with 5gb BW it would cost about $79.95... this apparently is a good deal in NZ. I think its a crime.

we get ripped off in south africa because we only have one telecommunications company known as Telkom, but often referred to as Hellkom and Telskum.

for example, for adsl, we pay R300 per month for a 512kbs line, which includes a 3GB cap! after that cap, its R100 per GB. our telecommunications prices are rated 2000% over most first-world countries.

despite this, telkom shows millions of rands of profit INCREASE each year, but the government wont step in, because they're on in the deal. its been proven in numerous studies that this one company is holding down the economy of the entire country. it prevents new companies from forming. basically, its a real mess.

in fact, the biggest reason i have for migrating overseas is for affordable communication. i know it sounds ridiculously drastic, but thats how bad it is. it would actually pay for me to do it.

for more information, you can take a look at MyADSL (http://www.myadsl.co.za/).

Broadband in Australia is terrible, its the governments fault for running our major telecommunications mob into the ground. The deal I have now has only just started to arrive at that price, its the fasted I can go as there is no ADSL2 2+ in my area yet. Make that most of Australia yet.

Is that 100Mb/s link just for the 4 of you or the enitre apartment complex ? If the entire complex then how many people ?

7.0 Mbps download / 768 kbps upload ADSL for $34.95 US I believe. I will have to ask my wife on the price...

Update: It's actually $34.95 a month as long as we have a one-year contract. No problem since Qwest ADSL has been working so incredibly well for us. Our new home is on the outskirts of the city so all the wiring is new to the CO. On average, we get over 6.0 Mbps on a daily basis.

I pay £25pm for unlimited adsl. Out of a possible 8mb downstream max I get 2.5mb & I have 256kb up with static IP.

I could get cheaper but I like the fixed IP & really like the terms & conditions - 1 page - no usage limits, no limits on computers connected to the line etc

edit:

Appears I have got slower. Not sure what the contention ratio is for my ISP but I bet there must be a few heavy downloaders localy sucking up all the bandwidth. They are probably Windows users too so I'll run the speed test again early in the morning whne there PCs are likely shutdown

Then don't call it fiber. It does not really matter as it is just a transport medium.

Thing is everybody out there has fiber, it's just the point it starts at.

In Greece i have dialup. 50.6k down, I dont want to know upload.

I want to switch either providers or to DSL.

Current provider blocks incoming ports such as 80, 22, 25, etc so I can't run any servers on my system and I can't ssh in from school. (Unless I'm doing it on non-standard ports which is annoying) - Also, one external IP for all computers connected to the router... which is crappy

The local DSL gets crappy signal to my home, unfortunately and satellite internet, even after this many years in development, is still a high priced joke only attractive to those living WAY out there.

i pay about 15$ a month for 2mpbs/256kbps connection, in delhi india, no download limit during night time, (i get abt 6gb a night, if the server supports it). The best part is that according to the authorities they are providing 2mbps during daytime and the night time unlimited is 256kbps only but in practice they never cap it during the night time too, so you get 2mbps during the whole day, and every stable. Feisty download was over in less than one hour.

About USD$30++ for 512 kbps download and 256 kbps upload speed. I know there are faster packages available from other ISPs but:

a) your actual speed might vary. Some of my friends achieve around 56 kbps speed because they're using cable connection and there're a lot of users within the area they live.

b) the ISPs actually restrict your download and upload speed

c) whether your BT downloads are legal/legitimate or not, they use P-cube to restrict it.

d) there is a chance you could get warning letters for even using BT, whether it's even for distributing your own materials.

*cries* The speeds you guys list are just mind-boggling :'(

Currently:
Download average: 100 Kbps
Upload average: 50 Kbps
Price: 60 Egyptian Pounds per month(about $12)
Limit: None
I could get the normal DSL here, but in the area where I live, there are no real telephone lines. So I have to put up with this crappy internet.( I am between the only 3 who have internet in a range of 5 miles)

In the hopefully very near future though:
Download average: 2 Mbps
Upload average: 1 Mbps
Price: 200 Egyptian Pounds per month( about $35)
Limit: 15 GB, with $1 for every extra GB

BTW, does anyone have experience with satellite internet? I'm thinking of setting it up for the whole community here. How expensive is it?

Thanks,

just curious as to the cost and speed in different parts of the world.

i pay CAD $25 (USD $22 18 EUROS) for a 2mbps/768k dsl connection. and i had to buy the modem and line filters seperately.

In New York, my household pays something like $40 a month for a 25Mbps symmetrical fiber connection from Verizon.

10 bucks per half year. 100mbit/s up and down. Gotta love how dormnet is connected to the apartments throughout the city ;)

Normally though, prices here are around 30-40 USD/month for a 24mbit/s line.

I live in the pacific northwest of the us.

In the mountains.

I have just two options for internet, where I live. Dialup and verizon wireless broadband.

I was on dialup for more than 15 years.

Last summer I decided to try verizon broadband.

The promise is 3.5mbs down. The reality is no different from dialup. Average 56k. With occassional bouts where I get up to 700k.

With a 5g cap.

And that is only when I am even -able- to get a connection. In a month, I have from 1 week to three weeks on average, of days when I can actualy connect.

For this, I pay 60 dollars a month.

And the equipment to get even this much of a connection cost well over 600 dollars.

If they do not improve things by the end of my contract, I am very seriously considering going back to dialup.

I can get dialup for ten dollars a month. Getting a very -iffy- connection, and only getting dialup speed most of the time when I -do- get a connection... For 60 dollars a month, is a crime.

I am on ADSL connection 6Mbps/900Kbps 20GB download limit for US$41. New Zealand has it bad when it comes to internet, mainly due to our remote geographical location and incumbant monopolistic Telecom company.

There was a unlimited data plan for same price but they canceled it just this month. It was heavily traffic shaped for P2P anyway but reportedly some people downloaded several terabytes a month and ruined it for everyone.

I might get 8k/s on a download on a satellite link in Afghanistan, and it costs me $50/30 days or 5gigs, whichever comes first.

Too slow and too much. Literally no broadband competition here whatsoever.

7mbps down and too-pathetic-to-mention upload for around $40.00 USD for cable (Roadrunner). In practice, my download speed is usually really good, but the upload is not even close to being as fast as the advertised amount I pay for, I think my ISP is throttling all their upload speeds to combat file-sharers, which is something I don't do, so it really pisses me off. I build websites now and then, and the initial uploads take forever and frequently get cut off. Thanks Time-Warner.

*drools when reading about other's bandwidth*

You are lucky. I am using P1 Wimax with only 400Kbps/100Kbps and 5GB cap that cost RM49.00 per month. And after the 5GB cap the speed will drop to 70% slower to about 90Kbps/25Kbps. But the signal is good.
