hi, i found this thread about undervolting a CPU - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786402 - it doesnt mention the atom but i find the bottom of my dell mini 9 gets damn hot very quickly and was just wondering if it was safe and whether there was any point at all in undervolting the cpu anyway? has anyone else done this?

thanks

The Atom is extremely cool and has a low TDP, so there would be very little benefit.

Yep. Odds are a few square centimeters of someone's person puts out more (wasted) thermal energy than an Atom does.

From experience -- no point at all. I tried it, and even with very aggressive settings there was no noticeable core temperature decrease or any improvement to battery life.

This is most likely something else producing the heat. Maybe the Graphics?

The Northbridge actually consumes a hell of a lot more power than the Atom does.
