View Full Version : [ubuntu] Which webcam should I buy?

August 25th, 2009, 04:06 AM
Decided to start using Ekiga, and my ancient webcam won't cut it. I assume I'd like a camera and head mounted microphone. What's some good compatible equipment.

1) for economy buy...

2) For lets spend some money buy...

Have an old laptop Intrepid with Pentium III, USB2, and analog audio

Have a nicer celeron desktop, USB2, analog audio, and the usual PCI slots

Would prefer not to move from Intrepid to Jaunty on the laptop, it's noticably slower.

Robbie Ferguson at Category5.tv recommends the Blue Eyeball webcam Episode 92 I believe. I think the link is http://www.bluemic.com/eyeball/

I do not have one but just tell you that Robbie a Ubuntu Guru recommends it.

Really? Blue Eyeball doesn't work in Linux for me. Why did he recommend it?

open a terminal type, gstreamer-properties click enter
click video try v4l1 and v4l2
click the bottom test button for each 1

plug in the old cam see if it comes on
try it in ekiga , cheese
if it only comes on 1 time rerun gstreamer
and do not open cheese

get wxcam

hope this helps

Eyeball 1.0 works there with Video 4 Linux 2, but not in Skype. Eyeball 2.0 doesn't work in either.

They work in Cheese, but only at some of the resolutions that are listed in Preferences. Others just show black, and when I try to take a picture it does nothing other than graying out the snapshot button.

Eyeball 1.0:

160x120 Yes
176x144 Yes
320x240 Yes
352x288 No
640x480 Yes
1280x800 Yes
1280x1024 Yes

Eyeball 2.0:

160x120 Yes
176x144 Yes
320x240 No
352x288 No
640x480 No
800x600 Yes
1280x960 No
1280x1024 No
1600x1200 No

Why does it list resolutions that don't work?
