I've got alpha 3 installed on my netbook, now what do I have to do add/remove to upgrade to alpha 4, w/o installing a complete new system? Are both Firefox's really neccisary?

Just keep up with the regular updates and you'll be fine. There is no need to reinstall; you will eventually be upgraded to the full release in October.

Firefox 3.0 is part of the Ubuntu package, can't really be removed. I assume ya installed 3.5 as a separate package, ya can remove that if you wish. Long as ya have another browser than firefox, just use that and remove the icons from taskbar, it doesn't take that much space don't worry about it.
