Also along with your favourites what other ones would you recommend? I am trying to find alternatives to my current default programs that i use to see if anything else works better than the programs i am using. I know there are a lot of sites around with lists of Linux alternatives but i have found that most of the software i use isn't generally on those lists. I have had to do a lot of searching. I have found software that i am pretty happy with but i just want to see what other software is out there that may not be mentioned enough but is well capable. Thanks

1. Audio playback

Amarok and Rhythmbox. iTunes on windows.

2. Media playback

Mplayer; play; mpg321; oggdec; totem-xine; VLC; etc.

3. Photo editing

GIMP. Photoshop on windows.

4. Photo management

Linux directories, using the command line and nautilus file browser. I don't believe in all that cruft about organizing your photos with f-spot or whatever, when you can just as easily do it with good folder structures.

6. Vector graphics

Inkscape of course. Also, Illustrator on windows.

7. Office work

Vim text editor. Openoffice if I really need the extra cruft.

8. Web Design

Vim text editor, drupal web interface, GIMP, etc.

9. Disc burning

Brasero.

10. Brain storming

My brain...? Anything will do pretty well here.

11. Podcast catching

Web browser. I seldom subscribe to podcasts.

13. Workload organizing

The linux kernel? What do you mean by this...

14. DVD ripping

Handbrake. Don't know if there's a linux version, haven't done any rips in ages.

1. Audio playback
On my Mac, QuickTime Player does the job quite well. On Windows and Linux, VLC is perfect.

2. Media playback
Ditto.

3. Photo editing
GIMP.

4. Photo management
On the Mac, iPhoto. On Linux, F-Spot. On Windows, Windows Photo Gallery does the job surprisingly well.

5. Audio recording
A dictaphone. Or my iPod, which works surprisingly well.

6. Vector graphics
Inkscape.

7. Office work
I flip between LyX and OpenOffice.org. LyX is magnificent, and I highly recommend it to anyone. (On the Mac, I use TeXshop and iWork, and when I'm forced to use Windows I use Borg- sorry, Microsoft Office.)

8. Web Design
um... any text editor that I can lay my hands on.

9. Disc burning
k3b (I hate its interface, but unfortunately Brasero is far too buggy). Occasionally, I'll use wodim at the command line.

10. Brain storming
A piece of paper.

11. Podcast catching
On the Mac and on Windows, iTunes. On Linux, Rhythmbox.

12. Audio production
Audacity (or GarageBand on the Mac.)

13. Workload organizing
My brain.

14. DVD ripping
HandBrake.
