If any of you have a Geocities (http://geocities.yahoo.com/) account, you're probably aware that Yahoo! is closing Geocities this October. Which sucks. I've had it for years and now I have to look for another free web hosting site. I decided to take an easier route earlier this year and proceeded to painstakingly backup file after file single-handedly with Google Pages.
Just my luck though, because Google Pages (http://pages.google.com/-/about.html) is being closed in favour of Google Sites. I find Google Sites (http://sites.google.com/) to be deplorable as it doesn't even allow you to do the simplest things (I can't even upload the many pages I need to move from Geocities).
Recently, I think I've finally found at a more than adequate substitute for Geocities. It offers FTP, e-mails, cPanel, php, MySQL, backups, plenty of space and bandwidth. Until now I thought you could only get these things if you paid for them.
What a relief! Now if only I can move everything to my new site more efficiently... (any ideas will be greatly appreciated). I mean even in the Yahoo! help sections the only methods of moving your files are either to save each page one by one, or to copy and paste the source code for each page one by one into a new file. Personally, I think Yahoo! is nuts for even suggesting this route and not offering a better solution. A lot of people out there have hundreds of files to backup.
Also, if anyone out there can find a better FREE web hosting solution than 000webhost.com. Let me know before I get settled, because it's going to take me a while -_-
