Hello,

One day I thought I would install Intrepid on my wife's old Inspiron 5150. I wanted to get her moved over to Ubuntu, so I installed it on external USB hard drive so she could give it s test run.

The install kept failing with a "black screen of death", and an error message with something about "the machine turned off due to excessive heat..blah, blah, blah...".

Eventually, once I could keep this baby cool the install and updates were successful. I just wanted to share these funny shots. Enjoy! :P

Cheers,
brookie

lol

i had the same problem and i had to put my Laptop at the edge of my Balcony at the apartment which is 18 floors up... the wind kept it cool long enuf for the XP install

more "permanent" fix was cleaning out the laptop of dust and such that's stuck in there which prevented it from running smoothly

Hmm, a screwdriver and a vacuum cleaner is what you need, but making sure that ACPI is enabled is also important.

I find it ridiculous that you should need to resort to something like that. I would double check to make sure the CPU cooler and other fans are working properly.
