Could someone please tell me what Linux Clusters are used for, I remember hearing about them last year but don't know anything about them, I did do a google search and found some nice pictures of them http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&um=1&sa=1&q=Linux+Cluster&btnG=Search+images&aq=f&oq=&start=0

I met a guy at MIT who is using a linux cluster to run his solar powered super-collider project. He has a couple hundred 386 boards.

Hollywood uses linux clusters in their renderfarms to make all those CGI graphics. The small ones have over 2,000 quad core machines running 24/7 to render the frames for movies like Transformers and Lord of the Rings. They do like 30 frames a day for the easy stuff.

The simplest and most practical use is storage clustering.
2 old computers and you are away in less than an hour with drbd and heartbeat.
