I only know about Google (http://www.google.com) that they are using Ubuntu as their official OS. Is there any other company or institute (both giant or small), who are using Ubuntu?

Wikipedia has Ubuntu in its servers (I think they also use Debian in some), but I can't remember others right now.

I've heard they actually run a modified version of Ubuntu, some people call it Goobuntu.

Google uses customized vesions of several Linux OS'es. I would assume also UNIX and MS as well. They provide services for all platforms, So they would probably use them all. As for Ubuntu, Mark Shuttleworth confirmed the Ubuntu/Google relationship a while back in a blog entry.

Have a look at this this (http://www.workswithu.com/the-works-with-u-1000/) page. It will answer your question.

I read somewhere the French police planned a pretty big Linux deployment, and chose Ubuntu for desktops.

the french federal police force / guerilla-force-waiting-for-an-invasion / paramilitary use ubuntu. can't recall the exact name of the organization.

given the possibility of a Windows kill-switch in the hands of the US government (or others, if you assume that US information security is no more perfect than anything else in this world), and given that France has never been over enthusiastic about NATO, it makes outstanding sense.

wargame the absolute worst case scenario for France in your head for a moment, and consider that this worst case is the exact reason to have a militia.

my point was i've not heard of google using a modified or any distro as their "official OS".

I worked at Opera for a while. First thing they asked is was which linux distribution I wanted to use. :) About 90% of the employees were using Ubuntu and I think there were a few with Debian and Mandriva. Then there was the secretary using Win XP. :)

We tried Ubuntu as mysql server last year. Then switched to Debian :) It is more stable then Ubuntu for sure and server just needs stability, nothing more than that.
