You sure that you downloaded the windows eclipse?

do this

$> file eclipse

send what you see. It should show are ELF executable.

If it is linux executable then you could do this

$> strace ./eclipse

This should show why it is failing.

I got the same thing after downloading Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) from the website (double checked, it was the Linux version). I recommend just doing installing it via APT. It works, even though I think it is still 3.2.

Hi, I am running into similar problem. I just downloaded and unzipped eclipse-jee-helios-SR1-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz and am running on ubuntu 10.04 64bit.

After running the above commands I get the following:

desktop:~/apps/eclipse$ strace ./eclipse
execve("./eclipse", ["./eclipse"], [/* 40 vars */]) = -1 ENOEXEC (Exec format error)
dup(2) = 3
fcntl64(3, F_GETFL) = 0x2 (flags O_RDWR)
fstat64(3, {st_mode=S_IFCHR|0620, st_rdev=makedev(136, 0), ...}) = 0
mmap2(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0xb78a0000
_llseek(3, 0, 0xbfa23e78, SEEK_CUR) = -1 ESPIPE (Illegal seek)
write(3, "strace: exec: Exec format error\n", 32strace: exec: Exec format error
) = 32
close(3) = 0
munmap(0xb78a0000, 4096) = 0
exit_group(1) = ?

Any insight greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
