I was trying to install Xubuntu 8.10 on a Gateway Desktop computer today with decent specs: Gateway E 3400 866Mhz cpu, 256mb ram, 20 gig drive etc.

It was going so good till the xubuntu status bar finished.

I got to enter keyboard type & location & the background behind the setup window was totally messed up looked like scrambled tv paused behind it then after I hit enter on the location it started going nutz with some kind of errors.

98 and 2000 run fine on it but not any flavor of ubuntu. I know it has very low video memory but that's why I chose xubuntu.

anyone know why it would fail?

Turns out Xubuntu don't like the 2mb intel graphics controller. I put in a 1 mb pci card and no video problems. It also doesn't like the onboard lan either so I put in a pci Ethernet card.

next time try to post error messages, its way more specific than "it crashes"
