My kids use the internet alot and i am forever removing adware and spyware because they use windows.

Now is it possible i install ubuntu and use a virtual box and install windows inside that and they can use that instead, would that give the same security as if i was running ubuntu on its own?

Nope. The Windows VM would behave the same as a standard Windows install, you still need AV software, firewall etc..

Why not just make the kids use Ubuntu?

Oh. You would still get viruses, its just that they would only infect your virtual pc. So you would still get a very infected virtual machine. Your ubuntu will not be infected but your virtual machine is not protected by the ubuntu security. Bad idea if you already know that you will get viruses. Get Kaspersky Internet Security: the best there is . Its not free sadly, but you could always torrent it...

One big advantage of the VM would be the snapshot feature.

Snapshot it virus free and you've got a darn quick restore to clean facility.
