My Acer Aspire 4730Z experienced a system crash (it hung and then would not boot up after I forced a shutdown) a few days ago that required reinstalling Ubuntu Jaunty.

Before the crash:
I was able to set the video resolution to 1680x1050. Audio was loud enough with external speakers that I could get complaints when I turned the volume up.

Now:
The only resolution option available is 1024x768. The audio - with all devices and settings maxed - is very low, so much so that I have to strain to hear quiet musical passages.

Where can I look to begin my search for a solution?

Sound like a hardware issue to me. (yes, hardware does go bad) You should run a hardware diagnostics program to make sure. PM me for more information.
