A little more information about the problems you're experiencing and/or your system specs might be helpful..... the information at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs is usually sufficient.

when i put in a dvd and try to play it with the media player it acts like it will play but continues to buffer and never gets to the movie and it eventually completly slows the computer down to an unusale speed even the cursor is hard to use i finally have to force quit

Hello people!

I was having exactly the same problem like yous all. I just followed the instruction of following web site; https://help.ubuntu.com/7.04/musicvideophotos/C/video.html and now, I can watch any kind of DVD's in my Ubuntu!

some of the packages u wont be able to find; libdvdplay0, no worries!

and instead of libdvdread3, u'll find libdvdread4!

so, when u go to the terminal, beware of changing the number 3 and write 4.

after that, u can watch DVD's with VLC, Xine, etc

I hope this will help you go on enjoying Ubuntu like I do.

cheers
