Greetings all, I am brand new to the Ubuntu forums and O/S and thought I'd introduce myself! I have recently made the jump to Ubuntu due, in part, to particularly malicious virus infections on my old XP installation. I decided to go with Ubuntu because I had used it before whilst studying a BSc in Computer Science. Don't let that fool you though, I am very junior in the world of Ubuntu! I am looking forward to getting to know the regulars and learn from those that know more than I (everyone!).

:lolflag: Thanks for the welcomes ! May I ask, is it a good idea to install the restricted extras? And what are they?

Flash, Java, MS Fonts (Arial, Times, etc), MP3 codecs and more.

Restricted is, well, what it says. I assume the reason it was posted is because Restricted contains the codecs (they're just some files you need to make cd's / music work in a sense). It basically means you can put a CD in/ DVD in and it will play.
Yes, they're a good idea - arguable in some peoples opinion. The reason they arent included is because they are sometimes copyright and the distributors of Linux would have to pay to distribute them. You don't have to pay to though as far as I know.

The arguable bit I mentioned is because some people think all software should be free and open. I try to adhere to this myself but it's a bit like being a vegetarian - you sometimes fancy a steak, take the easy route.

Read this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

It explains it better than I can. Welcome to Linux and don't give up - it really is better than Windows. if you give it about a month you will never, ever go back to Windows.

They're a set of multimedia codecs and also Flash Player and Java so yes, you will need to install them if you want a good internet and multimedia experience.

Ubuntu doesn't ship them for legal reasons, although other distros (like Linux Mint) do.

Do you play games much? There are a good number of games you can play on Linux:

Hope you enjoy using Ubuntu and welcome to the forum.:)

Yeah I love video games, which is one reason I am not "ubuntu - only" yet. I play various games on XP (dual boot method!) such as ETQW, Red Alert 3 etc. I understand that I can use WINE to use these programs also, so maybe I will completely migrate to Ubuntu if WINE works well with my games. Thanks for those links Sealbhach, they look great :) Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome!

EDIT: I have a PDF document open here and when I highlight the text, it displays it as gobbly-dee-gook. Why is that ?

Welcome to the forum and to Ubuntu. I have been using Ubuntu as a basis for the new systems I am building at work (Hylafax servers, terminal server replacement, etc). These forums and those that man them are one of the main reasons I have been as successful as I have been. Enjoy and I hope to be able to help someday!

hmm...wierd, must be something to do with the fact that its a programming language, maybe trying a post in the Development & Programming (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=39) section of the forums and asking if anyone else has had the same issue of code in pdf docs getting messed up.

or try General Help

either way someone will have the answer

good luck
