I upgraded today. The old Compaq I have is pretty usable now. I would have to say it's at least 3 times faster than it was. I upgraded my 2.59 Celeron to a 2.79 P4, and while it was an improvement, it was nowhere near as dramatic a change. They must have really had the chokers on those old Celerons.

If you're on a budget, AMD should be your choice IMO.

The P3 was a good processor for its time, the P4 was definitely not.

You can't put an AMD in a Intel socket, can you? I got the P3 on ebay for $8

No, you can't but if you were building an entirely new PC and were on a budget then AMD would be a better choice. But wow $8, that is pretty cheap :P
