From previous threads, I get that Ubuntu 8.04's repositories will never update Firefox beyond v.3.0. But I'd like to run Firefox 3.5 on Ubuntu 8.04 without naming it "Shiratake" (or whatever). Can I just un-install the existing Firefox v.3.0 and tell Synaptic Package Manager to forget about Firefox in the future, and then download and install Firefox 3.5 manually? I'm willing to not depend on Synaptic Package Manager for updates to Firefox, but I don't want to confuse it and have it keep trying to replace or update Firefox v.3.5 for me.

This has worked for me (in Intrepid) and many others...

Thanks, Bluelamp999. After much consideration, I've decided to stick with Synaptic Package Manager and Firefox 3.0. For the next couple months, I'd rather not have to remember how to do something or to have to diagnose something wrong that I've done. But thanks again for your indulgence. I'm sorry that it took me so long to reply.
