I have a studio 17 from Dell with a ATI Mobili.ty Radeon HD 3650.
If I enable destop effects or compiz everything slows down to a crawl.
Result of the compiz test :

Gathering information about your system...

Distribution: Ubuntu 9.04
Desktop environment: GNOME
Graphics chip: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3650
Driver in use: fglrx
Rendering method: None

Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system... [SKIP]

Checking for hardware/setup problems... [SKIP]

At least one check had to be skipped:
Error: No rendering method in use (AIGLX, Xgl or Nvidia)

Does anyone know if there is a driver I can update or change something so I can use compiz ?
The current driver is ATI/AMD FGLRX driver

how did you install your graphic card drivers?
you may want to try these drivers (http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.5&lang=English) and here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalyst_Control_Center) is
some more info.

How do I safely remove the current driver I have now and install the one from the link ?

it should be in synaptic so all you do is find the
driver and uncheck it then click apply

I'm still learning linux, I read the installer notes for the driver and I get the feeling that it's a little out of my league....

Just take it one step at a time you'll learn
linux it's not hard just different

Actually I really like linux, and yes it's vastly different from windows.
But it's hard, in windows there is almost always a way back, and usually it's not even that hard (it can go ugly as well....).
But in linux when you make an error the way back is usually very hard if you don't know how to code or know commands by memory.
And there isn't a restore point or an undo function so it is much harder to use the try and error method in linux.
